New books

Today I'll share the books that arrived on Monday.

I already started to read this one. I'm hooked.

This one sounds a perfect vampire story. I love the cover!

Have you read or heard of these? If you have, what do you think? And tell me which of these books I should read after Heartbeat!

A song from the playlist (1)

I created a playlist for the first Young Fighters novel few months ago, and now I'll talk about the first song on the list, Daughtry's Supernatural.

Supernatural has inspired me since I heard it first time about four years ago. It's the first song on the list because it fits the story so well. It could also be the theme song of the novel.

Here's the song and the lyrics:

Lyrics:

Lost from the start, I might as well be on the moon
Much colder than I thought even in the month of June
No communication makes you feel so alone
Well, all we need is patience of which I've never really known

But now it's too late, it's taking over me, it feels so supernatural
And I'm pulled the other way, it's more than I can take
And I'm losing hold of everything
And no matter how I try you know I can't deny
'cause you feel so supernatural

Every step I've taken has led me here to where you are
But all that I believe in is keeping me from seeing too far
Throwing out the questions, waiting for the right reply
Looking for the answers, tell me will it be tonight

But now it's too late, it's taking over me, it feels so supernatural
And I'm pulled the other way, it's more than I can take
And I'm losing hold of everything
When it's more than physical, it's kind of hard to see beyond the glow

And no matter how I try you know I can't deny
'cause you feel so supernatural

Through the atmosphere I'm seeing
glimpses of the past I'm leaving
Holding on for life as we collide

Now it's too late, it's taking over me, it feels so supernatural
And I'm pulled the other way, it's more than I can take
And I'm losing hold of everything
When it's more than physical, it's kind of hard to see beyond the glow
And no matter how I try you know I can't deny
'cause you feel so supernatural

Feel so supernatural
Feel so supernatural
Feel so supernatural
Feel so supernatural

In the world of books

I've seen many English YA titles in Finnish bookstores lately. Reading in English is getting very popular here and I'm happy to see that booksellers have noticed it too. Now I'm going to share some of the books I've seen.

Finnish edition of Beautiful creatures released this year

I've read many good reviews of all these books and I can't wait to read them. It's interesting to see if there will be Finnish translations of these in the future.

Fascinating La Gomera (1)

Today I'll give you more information about inspiring Canaria Islands. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

We spent Saturday (12.30.2012) in La Gomera. It's one of the Canaria Islands only 30 minutes away from Tenerife. It's such a beautiful place!  The day inspired me so much that I decided to use La Gomera in my novel.

Our bus picked us up about 7:40 AM. We drove to the harbor in Los Cristianos and continued the journey on a ship.

Tenerife in the morning

From the harbor

I'm wondering if that ship was Finnish.. 'Armas' is an old word that means 'darling' in Finnish.

When we arrived La Gomera, we walked around in San Sebastian, the capital of the island. It's also the  place where Columbus stayed before sailing to America. Here are few pictures from the town:

An old watchtower
From the commercial house of San Sebastian

I love these colorful houses <3

From a church

Our guide told us that according a story Columbus visited this church, but it's likely that the church he really visited doesn't exist anymore.

They say that Columbus took water from this cave. No one is sure if it's true, though.

After San Sebastian we drove to the mountains.

The palms and the roads! <3

Stopping by at a banana farm. Here we learned how to produce palm honey, for example.

I'd love to buy a house from there!

I'll post more pictures from La Gomera soon!

Review: Shadowlands by Kate Brian

Title: Shadowlands
Author: Kate Brian
Publisher: Hyperion
Published: 2012

Rory Miller had one chance to fight back and she took it. Rory survived... and the serial killer who attacked her escaped. Now that infamous Steven Nell is on the loose, Rory must enter witness protection with her father and sister, Darcy, leaving their friends and family without so much as a good-bye.

Starting over in a new town with only each other is unimaginable for Rory and Darcy. They were inseparable as children, but they haven't gotten along for years. As the sisters settle in at Juniper Landing, a picturesque vacation island, it seems as if their new home may be just the fresh start they need. They fall in with a group of beautiful, carefree teens and spend their days surfing, partying on the beach, and hiking into endless sunsets. But just as they start to feel safe, one of their new friends goes.  Is it a coincidence? Or is the nightmare beginning all over again?

"I opened my eyes, and my room came slowly into focus. Then I blinked. I could have sworn I'd left my bed unmade that morning. But now it was made with perfect hospital corners, the pillows neatly fluffed. And there, on my patchwork bedspread, was a single red rose.

For a moment, I wondered if Christopher had left it for me. A small note was tucked beneath the rose's  thorny stem. A ragged breath caught in my throat. On the card, printed in all-too-familiar capital letters and underlined three times, five ominous words: WE WILL BE TOGETHER. SOON."

When I heard of this book I thought it's made for me. I was more than right. Shadowlands really got under my skin and made my heart beat fast for a long time after I'd read it.

The beginning of the book was fabulous. It lead me straight to Rory's worst nightmare, so I could really feel how terrified she was when Steven Nell attacked her. The plot got only better from there. Juniper Landing was full of strange events and mysterious people, and Brian showed it perfectly. After every chapter I tried to guess what happens next, and I surprised every time. The book kept me guessing and shocked me in the end. The ending was absolutely amazing - I know I have to read the book again to put the pieces together.

I felt so sorry for Rory. Life with quite mean sister and introverted father isn't easy. I really loved the way Brian showed how different Rory and Darcy were and how unfair the situation was. The way the author describes their new friends is interesting and the place where they live highlights the chaos of Rory's life. I also loved the chapters that were written from Steven Nell's point of view. They were a huge plus and made the story even more scary.

The only thing that disturbed me was that  Rory's reactions and emotions were mostly described  physically, which made me feel that the descriptions repeated themselves a little bit. I'd liked to hear more about Rory's thoughts.

Shadowlands is an interesting, original novel that I recommend everyone. It's definitely one of the best books I've read.

My rating: 4,5/5 stars
